Cecil honored before induction to HOF
Hall of Fame inductee and former Wildcat safety Chuck Cecil will be honored at halftime of the Arizona football game against UCLA on Oct. 24 for being chosen to the College Football Hall of Fame.
The All-American, who played for Arizona from 1984-87, is the school’s all-time interceptions leader, picking off NCAA quarterbacks 21 times throughout his career in Tucson.
Maybe best-known for his 100-yard interception return for a touchdown against ASU in the 1986 Duel in the Desert, Cecil is now the defensive coordinator for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans.
Cecil played in the NFL for seven seasons for the Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals and Houston Oilers.
Dive coach Mitchell recognized
The United States Aquatic Sports rewarded Arizona head diving coach Dr. Michele Mitchell with the Phil Boggs award at a banquet Saturday, honoring her for an influential career in the diving field.
An award given based upon merit rather than on a year-by-year basis, the Phil Boggs honor has not been given out since 2005.
Mitchell was an Arizona dive team member and won nine U.S. National Championships before earning silver medals in the 1984 and 1988 Olympics.
“”To be publically recognized for years of service to an organization that I hold so dear to my heart is an honor in itself,”” Mitchell said through Arizona Athletics. “”And to have the University of Arizona be synonymous with my name brings it even closer to home.””
