Junior Karin Wurm will represent Arizona on floor in the finals of the NCAA Gymnastics Championships tomorrow, but yesterday’s competition was the end of the season for her teammates.
The top four finishers in each event in each of two sessions yesterday – including ties – will continue on to tomorrow’s individual event finals.
Wurm scored a 39.200 to finish eighth all-around, but her 9.850 on floor landed her in an eight-way tie for third place, good enough to advance to tomorrow’s event final.
“”I was really surprised,”” Wurm said of her success on floor. “”If anything I thought I would make bars.””
Wurm also scored 9.850s on the uneven bars and vault, good for 10th and 18th, respectively.
After qualifying to nationals for the first time with a first-place 9.925 on beam at regionals, senior Jamie Holton fell during her routine and finished 41st out of 43 gymnasts last night with a 9.200.
“”Jamie’s disappointed because she fell, but we told her she’s an amazing gymnast and … she has nothing to regret,”” Wurm said.
Also in her first NCAA appearance, freshman Brittney Morgan scored a 38.975 all-around to finish in a three-way tie for 12th out of 21 gymnasts. Her highest-scoring performance was a 9.775 on beam, good for 27th place.
