The ASUA Senate received a briefing last night on how money raised from this year’s Arizona Student Association’s fee increase is being spent.
A majority of the money, which was raised by increasing the fee from $1 to $2, is being spent on faculty and campus organizers, said Michael Slugocki, board chair of the ASA.
“”We have hired a campus organizer directly for the UA, and it has already had a significant impact,”” Slugocki said. “”It is a great way for students to get connected and be more physically involved and increase the student voice both locally and statewide.””
The fee increase doubled the budget for ASA and has allowed them to put more money into all three of Arizona’s state-funded universities, he said.
“”(The fee increase) essentially doubled our budget to a little under $600,000…that’s a statewide budget with students from (UA, Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University),”” Slugocki said. “”A majority is going toward staff and the other (portion) is going toward issues, programs and campaigns we’re running.””
The senate also discussed a mock U.S.-Mexico border that will be on the UA Mall starting Monday.
“”The Social Justice Leadership Center, a part of (the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership), is putting up a mock border,”” said Tommy Bruce, Associated Students of the University of Arizona President. “”It’s a chain link fence that gives information to people… the pros and cons (to both sides of the border issue), and it is symbolic in what they are calling passive education.””
