The Thomas W. Keating Bioresearch Building is now open after it was evacuated earlier this evening when the University of Arizona Police Department received a report of a “foul” odor.
The source of the odor, which was described to police as a strong chlorine or bleach smell, was determined to be a sewage backup.
Sgt. Fil Barrera, public information officer for UAPD, said police received the report at 6:22 p.m.
“I don’t know if it was students of faculty, but they said that there was an odor that made them feel uncomfortable,” Barrera said. “Like maybe a little dizzy.”
Officers then went to the building and pulled the fire alarm to evacuate the building.
Tucson Fire Department and Risk Management arrived on scene, where they determined the source of the smell to be a sewage drain.
“No injuries, no one went to the hospital,” Barrera said. “Everyone was fine they just had that foul smell.”
The building has now been reopened, and Facilities Management has been notified to fix the drain, Barrera said.
