‘Cats easily devour Rice

The Arizona men’s basketball team fought off the Rice Owls with an 84-57 victory in Houston, Texas, on Wednesday evening behind a double-double by UA sophomore Derrick Williams.

Williams scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in just 24 minutes while only needing eight shot attempts. He was assisted by Jamelle Horne’s 15 points, 12 of which came from behind the 3-point line.

Point guard Momo Jones also played well after a rough first six games. He scored 11 but also recorded three assists for Arizona, which moves to 6-1 on the season.

The Wildcats once again won by steadily building a lead then wearing on their opponents during the second half.

The game tied at eight points apiece five minutes through, and a lay-up by Williams would give the Wildcats the lead for good.

Culminating with a Jones jumper, Arizona went on a 26-8 run to gain a 34-16 lead with 3:22 left in the first half. Head coach Sean Miller’s squad led the Owls (3-4) 37-21 at halftime.

Leading by 20 points, 67-47, with just under six minutes remaining in the game, Arizona squashed any attempts of an Owl run behind a 3-pointer from center Kyryl Natyazhko and dunk by Horne a few minutes later.

Arizona’s bench scored 28 points behind freshman point guard Jordin Mayes’ 11 points.

As a team, the Wildcats shot nearly 93 percent from the foul stripe, 42 percent from 3-point range and 57 percent from the field, overall. They earned 19 points off turnovers and 17 second-chance points by outrebounding the Rice team by 11.

They held rice to 38 percent shooting from the field. Arsalan Kazemi led the Owls with 17 points and six rebounds.
