Solomon Hill scored 15 points and Arizona opened the second half with five consecutive made 3-pointers en route to a 53-39 victory over in-state rival NAU on Saturday.
Senior guard Kyle Fogg hit three straight 3s from the same spot on the floor to get the second half started. Fogg ended the game with 11 points and two assists on 3-of-8 shooting.
The Wildcats missed their first five shots of the game before Josiah Turner knocked down a 3-pointer from the wing, but the UA didn’t hit another jumper in the game’s first 9 minutes and 20 seconds while trailing for the game’s first 14-plus minutes.
Hill tied the game at 16 with an offensive rebound and put-back then gave Arizona the lead on a similar play on the Wildcats’ next possession, and the Wildcats didn’t trail again in the game.
Arizona struggled against NAU’s 2-3 zone in the first half, shooting just 3-of-11 from deep and failing to get into an offensive rhythm, shooting just 35.5 percent.
But the Wildcats were sparked by Fogg’s run to open the second half and ended the game shooting 43.2 percent from the field and 32 percent from 3-point range.
Freshman guard Nick Johnson added nine points, two of which came on an alley-oop from Turner toward the end of the first half.
Junior forward Kyryl Natyazhko didn’t see any action for the first time this season. The WIldcats held a 29-26 rebounding advantage and turned the ball over just seven times. Neither team shot better than 50 percent from the free throw line.
Arizona continues its season on Wednesday with road game at No. 10 Florida.
