After its 3-0 win at then No. 20 UCLA, Arizona volleyball has risen to No. 14 in the rankings, its highest ranking since 2005. Freshman middle blocker McKenzie Jacobson was named the Pac-12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Arizona hockey freshman forward Alex Nespor scored four goals in his collegiate debut. The Wildcats beat NAU 8-2 in new head coach Chad Berman’s first game.

Former UA thrower Alyssa Hasslen was named one of nine finalists for 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year. Wildcats have won the award four times, three times since 2007.

Senior cross country runner Kristina Aubert finished second at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational. Aubert has won or finished second in all three of her races as a Wildcat.

Arizona soccer lost its Pac-12 opener 3-0 to No. 21 USC. The score line could’ve been worse, but senior goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman saved a Trojan penalty kick.

After starting the season 0-4, the Oakland Raiders fired head coach Dennis Allen on Monday. The Raiders have lost 10 games in a row, went 8-28 under Allen and have had 10 head coaches over the last 20 years, with just three total winning seasons.

Kansas football fired Charlie Weis after the Jayhawks went 6-22 under Weis. It’s been a quick fall from grace for Weis, who was hired as Notre Dame’s head coach in 2004 after successfully leading the New England Patriots’ offense.

After the Jameis Winston suspension fiasco, No. 1 Florida State escaped North Carolina State with a 56-41 win. After the game, the Seminoles had to face allegations that they faked injuries to slow down the Wolfpack’s attack.
