After a 3-2 win Friday night to open the Super Regional, the Arizona softball team took the field Saturday afternoon at Nusz Park looking to clinch a trip to the Women’s College World Series.
Devyn Netz took the mound for the Wildcats, looking to follow Hanah Bowen’s dominant outing on Friday.
Mississippi State struck first with 1 run in the second inning. The Wildcats’ defense was huge behind Netz, closing the second, third and fourth innings with double plays.
After being held scoreless through three innings, Arizona exploded in the fourth inning. Carlie Scupin put the Wildcats on the board and in the lead with a 2-run home run. The Wildcats went on to bat around in the frame and a couple hits and Mississippi State errors later, Arizona found themselves pouring in 7 fourth-inning runs to take a commanding 7-1 lead.
That was all the run support Netz needed, as she needed just 80 pitches to toss the complete game, allowing 1 run on five hits to go along with two strikeouts and three walks.
Despite starting Pac-12 play 0-8, Arizona advanced to the Women’s College World Series for the 25th time in program history.
