One of the two freshmen on Arizona women’s tennis team, Devin Chypyha, is from a small town outside of Toronto, Canada, called Richmond Hill.
She decided to come to Arizona because of the amazing blue skies and being able to wake up and have breakfast with beautiful scenery of mountains in the background. Chypyha said she had reasons other than the state’s beauty why she chose Arizona to play tennis and study biomedical sciences for the next four years.
“First of all, the conference — Pac-12 is one of the toughest competitive conferences for tennis,” Chypyha said. “I really wanted to compete and have some challenging matches. That always helps you improve.”
Chypyha said he started playing tennis when she was about three years old and has stuck with it throughout her life. She also enjoys golf when she has some free time from tennis and school.
She started playing tennis with her sister, who is two years older than her. The duo continued playing into their youth, and Chypyha decided to stick with it and play in college.
Her motivation since day one has been to simply enjoy playing tennis.
“I guess really just enjoying it and loving to be out there and work hard and improve,” Chypyha said. “Just be able to respond, and be yourself, and get better, and go on and play matches, and grow as a player and person.”
Chypyha’s main influence has been her parents, because they have always been there to support her throughout everything that she has done.
“They have always motivated me to always try and be the best I can and always be improving and doing good in school,” Chypyha said.
For the future, Chypyha hopes to start a career and be successful. In her tennis career, she hopes to make it to nationals.
“I guess I’m most looking forward to starting a career,” Chypyha said. “In the next four years I’m looking forward to being on the growing team and hopefully making it to nationals.”
