Arizona women’s golf traveled to Atlanta, Ga. to take part in the East Lake Cup from Monday, Oct. 28 to Wednesday, Oct. 30. The cup started with a round of stroke play, where Arizona finished second making par. Duke finished first with two strokes under par, Wake Forest finished third with four strokes over par and Auburn finished fourth with seven strokes over par.
After stroke play had concluded, the cup moved on to elimination play. Arizona ended up losing to Wake Forest in this round of the cup 3.5 games to 1.5 games. In match No. 1, Wake Forrest’s Emilia Migliaccio defeated Wildcat Sandra Nordaas. Match No. 2 was much of the same where Therese Warner of Arizona lost to Siyun Liu. Arizona lost the third match as well, as Gile Bite Starkute succumbed to Vanessa Knecht of Wake Forest, who finished tied for first in stroke play. Arizona drew match No. 4 between Wildcat Vivian Hou and Lauren Walsh. Arizona was able to pull out a win in the fifth match after a nice win from Ya Chun Chang.
After losing to Wake Forest, Arizona went on to play Duke in the consolation match. Duke, the former national champion, would not be easily beaten, but the Wildcats were able to pull off the upset and secure third place in a close contest winning 3-2. Arizona secured the win early by winning the first three of five matches. Therese Warner won 3 and 2, Ya Chun Chang won 5 and 4 and Vivian Hou won 3 and 1.
Arizona will be looking for more great performances from their players like they had against Duke for when they make the trip to Hawai’i next week.
