Arizona athletic director Greg Byrne met with former Florida head coach Urban Meyer in Miami early last week to discuss the Arizona’s vacant football head coaching position, but Meyer decided he wasn’t interested, The New York Times reported Tuesday.
An unnamed source told the Times that Meyer called Byrne to decline the job on Monday.
Meyer, currently working as an analyst for ESPN, is likely the most desirable coach on the market after going 65-15 and winning two national championships in six years at Florida.
Byrne hasn’t committed to a timeframe but said in October that he wants to have a coach in place soon after the regular season ends. Few details about the search are available as Byrne tries to be as secretive in the coaching search as possible.
