The Wildcats lost 2-1 to Central Florida on Friday and followed up with a 1-1 double-overtime draw against Boston University on Sunday to wrap up the their weekend at The Sun Devil Desert Classic in Tempe.
After a tough weekend, the Wildcats are looking at what’s ahead not what’s in the past.
Arizona faces a tough challenge this weekend when they face off against Florida Gulf Coast on Friday and follow up with a match against Texas Tech on Sunday in the Wildcat Classic. The two teams are a combined 9-2 coming into Tucson.
Looking back, head coach Tony Amato feels his team did not put their best foot forward.
“I don’t think we played great,” Amato said. “If I just look at our team and how we played…I don’t feel like it was a great performance either game.” Arizona has scored only two goals in their last three matches. In a conference as competitive as the Pac-12 the Wildcats know they have to be better.
“It’s the best women’s soccer conference in the country,” Amato said. “The margin of error is so small in our league if you don’t bring it on that day you can expect to lose.”
Led by senior Gabi Stoian, Arizona must find ways to stay in the loop.
“Pac-12 is always competitive, always brings challenges, but nothing we haven’t faced before,” Stoian said.
Looking ahead to this weekend the Wildcats are excited for the challenge that faces them this weekend. Both, Texas Tech and FGCU were in the NCAA tournament in 2016 and are playing well this year. Two wins can go a long way for Arizona in strength of schedule.
“It could be a really important weekend for us if we can find ways to get good results in both games,” Amato said. “I would be shocked if both of these teams were not once again in the NCAA tournament.”
Arizona will look to get back in the win column against FGCU on Friday, at 7:30 p.m. MST at Mulcahy Stadium.
