Arizona men’s and women’s tennis teams fought to win their season openers at Tucson Country Club on Saturday. The men defeated NAU while the women took down UC Santa Barbara.
“Overall the guys did a good job,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz. “They showed their nerves early on, but as the day went on they progressively played better.”
The men’s team went undefeated in singles play and only lost one match in doubles. The highlight of doubles play was the sibling rivalry game in which the Lumberjacks defeated the Wildcats 8-6. Arizona freshman Carlos Bermudez teamed up with sophomore Mario Urquidi to take on his brother Dominic Bermudez and Robert Martin.
“Even though we lost in doubles it felt really good to play,” said Carlos Bermudez. “This is my hometown and having my family come out to support me makes me nervous, but is exciting at the same time.”
Freshman Sumeet Shinde impressed in his collegiate debut. After teaming up with Giacomo Miccini to win their doubles match 8-3, Shinde defeated NAU junior Shaun Waters 6-3, 6-1.
Meanwhile, the women’s team defeated UC Santa Barbara 6-1 overall.
“We started off slow in doubles,” said head coach Vicky Maes. “But we battled to will all three doubles. We found a way to win and I was pleased with effort.”
Sophomore Susan McRann was the only Wildcat to fall to the Lumberjacks in singles play, 2-6, 3-6.
