A strong day one from the Arizona men’s golf team at the Copper Cup on Sunday, Jan. 16. However, it was soon followed by a disastrous performance on Monday, which resulted in an overall match loss to rival Arizona State. Coming away from day one of match play, Arizona had a measly 2-hole lead, which was highlighted by standout freshman Jackson Norwich, who clinched his match win in just 14 holes.
The Wildcats were not able to retain the lead and ultimately lost day two. The team lost the Copper Cup by a score of 15-9 in their first tournament of the year. A positive coming out of this tournament was Norwich, as he won both of his contests this weekend and even closed out his second day after the 15th hole.
A loss to your rival never sits right in your program, but head coach Jim Anderson thinks the experience will help his squad in the long run.
“We carded some strong scores yesterday and in the morning session but weren’t able to carry that momentum all the way to the end,” Anderson said. “I look forward to seeing our guys return to the course and compete at the Arizona Intercollegiate next week.”
The Arizona Intercollegiate tournament will start on Jan. 24, and take place on the Wildcats’ home turf, the Tucson Country Club.
