It was another rough weekend for the University of Arizona Men’s tennis team, as they dropped both of their matches on the road against Pac-12 foes USC and UCLA, both by scores of 4-0.

First up was USC on Saturday. In doubles, the senior pairing of Will Kneale and Oliver Plaskett fell to the USC freshman pairing of Brandon Holt and Riley Smith. Shortly after, UA juniors Trent Botha and Shoki Kasahara lost to senior Nick Crystal and sophomore Laurens Verboven, giving the Trojans the doubles point.

In singles, USC sophomore Jake Jaede defeated Kasahara, 6-1, 6-4. Junior Shoti Meparidze was beaten by Holt (6-2, 6-1), and then freshman Andres Reyes fell to Smith (6-4, 6-2), finalizing the score at 4-0.

Against UCLA, things didn’t get much better. In doubles, Plaskett and Kneale were beaten by UCLA freshman Evan Zhu and junior Martin Redlicki, 6-2. The Bruins won the doubles point when senior Joseph Di Giulio and junior Austin Rapp defeated Botha and Kasahara, 6-3.

In singles, Redlicki beat Kneale 6-0, 6-0. Reyes fell to UCLA freshman Ben Goldberg 6-1, 6-1, and then Zhu clinched the match for the Bruins with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Botha.

“UCLA played great today,” said Arizona head coach Clancy Shields. “They jumped on top of us and never let us into the match. We had moments where we played at the level needed to win, but we couldn’t sustain that level for long periods of time.”

The Wildcats will finish up their regular season schedule with a match in Salt Lake City on Saturday against the Utah Utes.
