In a game that saw only nine total hits, and two errors apiece for both teams, the Wildcats were able to win a sloppy one against New Mexico, 3-1.
Sophomore Alyssa Denham got the start for the ‘Cats, and she went the whole game, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out a career high of 10.
“Not my ‘A’ game,” Denham said of her performance. “You can have 20 strikeouts and still feel like you’re not your best, so my goal is just to keep improving every single game.”
Freshman Ivy Davis, who has been impressive since she joined the starting lineup, hit her third homer of the year in the bottom of the second, a two-run line drive to get the scoring started for Arizona.
“Once I saw that she was throwing strikes, I wanted to jump on it early in the game and get ahead,” Davis said.
In the bottom of the sixth, the ‘Cats added a little more run support for Denham, as Aleah Craighton hit a pop-up into shallow center field that dropped, scoring one, making it 3-1.
A win is a win, but head coach Mike Candrea didn’t seem very pleased, and after a very loud post game huddle, Candrea explained those feelings.
“Like I said a few weeks ago, I’m basing our progress on how we play, and tonight we looked like we had an ASU hangover,” he said. “The middle of our lineup was 0-12, we didn’t make adjustments, it was just an ugly game on our part.”
The Wildcats will be in action in Tucson again this weekend in a series against Oregon State, with the first game Friday, April 27, at 6 p.m.
