Five players from the Arizona men’s tennis team will be competing in the prestigious All-American Championships on Oct. 3 to 12, in Tulsa, Okla.
The All-American Championships, along with the Regional Championships in Malibu, Calif., are considered major fall tournaments in Division I collegiate tennis.
The Wildcats will send Jason Jaruvang, Trent Botha, Harry Busby, Oliver Plaskett and Naoki Takeda to the tournament at Tulsa.
Of the players selected, Takeda has received the most national attention as he was ranked 37th in the preseason individual rankings. Takeda was also selected as one of 48 players to compete in the main draw of the tournament which Arizona head coach Tad Berkowitz described as a “huge accomplishment.”
The rest of that were selected will be competing in the qualifying round. Jaruvang is coming off a hot start to the season after he captured both the singles and doubles tournament at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson last weekend.
Jaruvang wasn’t the only Wildcat to find success at the opening tournament. Busby made it to the doubles semifinals and the singles final where he was defeated by Jaruvang in an intense match.
Known as one of the grand slams in college tennis, the All-American Championships will be a great test for the Wildcats and should benefit them come Pac-12 Conference play in the spring.
