After falling to the Arizona State Sun Devils D1 club hockey team in overtime on Friday night, the No. 5 Arizona Hockey team was looking for redemption against their in-state rival on Saturday night.
After a scoreless first period, Adam Havener found the back of the net for the Sun Devils with 11:31 remaining in the second period. They followed this up with a second goal being scored by Jett Larson just 38 seconds later. Afterwards the first huge fight of the game occurred, resulting in a game suspension for Bayley Marshall for the Wildcats due to his major call for fighting. ASU was also penalized during the fight, as Brayden Shaw was sent to the penalty box with a double minor call for roughing. Arizona State scored another goal to go up 3-0 in the period.
The period ended with the Sun Devils ahead 3-1 after Christopher Westlund scored the first goal of the night for Arizona with just 1:36 left in the period.
In the third period, Ethan Stahlhuth scored with 14:33 left in the game for Arizona to bring the score back to a one-goal game. Then, after a scoreless power play effort from Arizona, the Sun Devils answered with a goal scored by Brendan Studioso with 7:03 left. The Sun Devils carried this lead into the end of regulation to secure their sweep on the road of the Wildcats.
Up next, Arizona hockey will host No. 22 Missouri State (8-9-2) on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
