The Democrats were anything but blue last night, as they celebrated Barack Obama’s presidential election victory at the Marriott Hotel west of campus. But as Obama delivered his final speech, a military man who had just come back from Iraq disrupted the cheers at the bar and was escorted out by the Tucson Police Department.
The man started yelling profanities during Obama’s speech and had a back-and-forth verbal argument with Pima County deputy Isabel Garcia, which escalated to the point where hotel manager Otha Taylor had to intervene and ask the man to leave.
He refused to remove himself and told Taylor, “”You can’t kick me out of here. Do you know who I am? I would like to call the fucking police right now.””
It was then that Taylor told his staff to call the police, and the man was escorted out of the hotel.
There were about 40 U.S. Armed Forces members staying at the Marriott on Second Street. They had just returned from Iraq, and they are training to go to Afghanistan.
A witness to the whole disturbance, Tom Jones, a 62-year-old financial adviser, attempted to keep the peace and told the involved parties to calm down, anticipating a riot of some sort to break loose.
Jones said he then told the police officer what had happened and proceeded to tell the man and his friends, “”You have got to be more responsible than that. You guys have been to war, and you think that everyone owes you, and they do, but you just took it to another level.””
