Three-time All-American senior thrower Sean Shields has been named the Pacific 10 Conference Field Athlete of the Week for the week of May 1.
Shields continued his outdoor season success last Saturday with a win in the shot put at the Arizona-ASU-NAU Double Dual with a throw of 19.74m.
Shields also placed second in the discus with his toss of 57.27m behind junior thrower Adam Kuehl, who tossed it 60.27m.
Earlier in the season, Shields placed third in the shot put with his best toss of 19.36 meters at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships March 10-11 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Fred Harvey, Arizona’s track and field head coach, said the award will boost his team’s morale.
“”It’s a really a great honor to be able to achieve this award so close to the Pac-10 Championships,”” Harvey said. “”It really helps give us momentum for the meet.””
Shields, who currently has the No. 3 shot put and No. 4 discus throw in the NCAA during the season, said he was surprised to hear that he won it.
“”It’s the first time I’ve ever won it since I’ve been here,”” Shields said. “”So I was pretty happy about it.””
Harvey said there are so many great athletes in the conference that getting an award like this is difficult.
‘It’s a very difficult honor to achieve,”” he said. “”You could have the third or fourth best throw in the country and still not get it because of the level of competition.””
His award comes two weeks after Kuehl was named the Pac-10 Field Athlete of the Week for the week of April 17.
