Swimming in eighth place after two relays at Pac-10s

The No. 4 Arizona women’s swimming team completed its first day of competition at the Pacific 10 Conference Championships yesterday in Long Beach, Calif., posting two individual victories in preliminary events.

The Wildcats are in eighth place after two relay finals in day one.

Senior Whitney Myers was victorious in the 200-yard individual medley, the event in which she holds the NCAA top-time this season, along with sophomore Lara Jackson who won the 50-yard freestyle.

Also in the 200y IM, eight swimmers finished in the top 25 slots of the event, including four freshmen Jenny Forster, Annie Chandler, Caitlin Iversen and Andrea Boritzke.

In the 50y freestyle preliminary event, the women posted six top-10 finishes with junior Lacey Nymeyer coming in second place behind Jackson.

Rounding off the preliminary individual events was freshman Joni Zimmerman, who came in eighth place in the 500y freestyle event.

In relay competition, the Wildcats missed the mark in both the 800y freestyle and 200y medley relays.

They saw the most success in the freestyle event, posting a second-place finish with the relay team of Myers, Nymeyer, Forster and redshirt freshman LeonǸ Vorster.

In the 200y medley relay, the same event the Wildcats won the title in last year, not one relay team placed in the event, while the “”A”” team of Jackson, Turner, Chandler and freshman Justine Schluntz was disqualified.
