Cornerback Cortez Johnson will leave the Arizona football team and transfer, head coach Rich Rodriguez said at practice Friday.
The New Orleans native is expected to transfer to a school in Louisiana, likely Louisiana Tech, where head coach Sonny Dykes is a former UA offensive coordinator.
Johnson, a 6-foot-2, 196-pound sophomore, was expected to compete for playing time in the defensive backfield this year. In his freshman season, under former coach Mike Stoops, Johnson started two games and recorded 16 tackles and one pass deflection.
As per NCAA regulations, wherever Johnson transfers he will have to sit out the 2012 season before he is eligible to play for his new school.
