It was a rough weekend on the road for the University of Arizona men’s tennis team as they dropped two matches to Pac-12 opponents Stanford and California by scores of 4-0.

Friday against Stanford marked the first doubles play for Arizona freshman Andres Reyes, but he and senior Will Kneale lost to Stanford senior Brandon Sutter and junior David Wilcynski 6-0.

UA senior Oliver Plaskett and junior Trent Botha lost to junior Tom Fawcett and senior Yale Goldberg, giving Stanford the doubles point.

In singles, Stanford freshman Sameer Kumar beat Kneale 6-2, 6-3, Reyes lost to Stanford freshman William Genesen 6-3, 6-1, and Stanford’s Goldberg beat sophomore Will Adkisson 6-3, 6-0, to give the Cardinals the 4-0 win.

Things didn’t get any better for the Wildcats on Saturday. In doubles, Cal junior J.T. Nishimura and freshman Bjorn Hoffman beat the Wildcats’ junior pairing of Shoki Kasahara and Shoti Meparidze 6-1. Cal senior Filip Bergevi and freshman Dominic Barretto defeated senior Will Kneale and freshman Andres Reyes, 6-2, securing the doubles point for the Golden Bears.

In singles play Nishimura defeated Kasahara, (6-0, 6-0), Hoffmann beat junior Trent Botha 6-0, 6-3, and Cal junior Billy Griffith beat Meparidze 6-0, 6-2, giving Cal the win.

“Half our team came to play today and believed that we could win, and the other half did not,” said Arizona head coach Clancy Shields. “The results are indicative of that belief and effort. We need to believe that victory is achievable every time we step on the court and it is our responsibility to give ourselves that chance. We have to address this in the upcoming week and look to finish our home schedule strong this weekend.”

The Wildcats will play their last two Pac-12 home matches this weekend beginning Friday at 2:00 P.M. against Washington and then on Sunday at 11:00 A.M. against the Oregon Ducks.
