A letter was recently published in the Daily Wildcat that contained a vital detail missing from its criticism and commentary on the [Associated Students of the University of Arizona] Senate and its proceedings.

ASUA is an umbrella term for organizations that serve the University of Arizona student body. It is understandable for those who are not familiar with this to refer to ASUA as solely the representatives that are elected, however, this is an oversimplification. To say that ASUA has failed the student body is to say that organizations, such as [the Student Health Advocacy Committee], Students for Sustainability and [Wildcat Events Board], have failed to help students during their time at the University of Arizona. There are many hardworking individuals who are not a part of the ASUA Supreme Court or Senate but are still a part of ASUA. Normally, this would not cause me to write a letter, but this has happened multiple times over the 2021-2022 and now the 2022-2023 school years.

There are many student organizations within ASUA that have been collaborative, seeking to expand resources for the needs of students and have a positive, documented record of this. Please make a note of this in the future, as this misuse misconstrues the efforts of many students and staff at the University of Arizona, and does not give credit where credit is due. It is understandable to want to change and improve the experiences of students at the University of Arizona, but let it not come at the expense of devaluing many dedicated individuals’ hard work.
