Junior shooting guard Nick Johnson scored 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds in the No. 3 Arizona Wildcats (26-2, 13-2 Pac-12) to a 87-59 victory over California at McKale Center on Wednesday.
Johnson added 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal to his first half totals. He ended the game shooting 7-for-14 from the field, 2-for-4 from beyond the perimeter and 6-for-8 from the free throw line.
Arizona led the Golden Bears (18-10, 9-6 Pac-12) by as many as 29 points and ended the night with better field goal, 3-point and free throw percentages than Cal.
However, Cal refused to fade into oblivion and put together one last attempt. The Golden Bears tightened the score to trail 55-47 with 12:23 remaining, but couldn’t muster up enough to surge past the Wildcats’ offensive production.
Sophomore center Kaleb Tarczewski finished the night with 16 points. He grabbed three rebounds and made both of his free throw attempts.
Freshman forward Aaron Gordon contributed with 13 points, four rebounds and a steal.
Freshman forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson added 12 points, 10 rebounds, an assist and block.
