Transfer Xavier guard Mark Lyons tweeted on Sunday that he has committed to Arizona.
“Excited to be a wildcat!!!!!!!”, he tweeted.
Lyons left Xavier in April and the Wildcats were long considered the favorite to land the 6-foot-1, 188-pound guard’s services. He was also reportedly considering Kentucky and Kansas.
Lyons was a third team All-Atlantic-10 selection for the Musketeers last year, averaging 15.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. Lyons was recruited to Xavier by Arizona head coach Sean Miller and spent a redshirt season under him before Miller left to take over at the UA in 2009.
Lyons is expected to be eligible to play immediately, rather than sit out the usually required one-year after transferring, as he expected to graduate and enroll at Arizona as a graduate student.
Lyons’ addition fills a huge hole for the Wildcats at the point guard position after Josiah Turner’s transfer to SMU. Arizona also added Duquesne transfer point guard T.J. McConnell this offseason, but he must sit out next season due to the NCAA transfer rules.
Other Wildcats have taken to Twitter to express excitement for their new teammate.
Incoming freshman forward Brandon Ashley tweeted: “Glad to hear (Lyons) is coming down to Tucson next year. Next year is about to be crazy! #beardown”.
