GymCats take second in Maryland in quad meet

The Arizona Gymnastics team hit the road for their first away quad meet to take on Maryland, Alaska Anchorage and the 2016 Big 10 champion Minnesota Gophers in College Park, MD on Saturday afternoon. The fell short by 1.650 points to Minnesota who took the victory with 194.875.

The GymCats started off the first rotation on balance beam with a strong performance by junior Madison Cindric scoring 9.775. Freshman Courtney Cowles made her first appearance this season following close behind Cindric with a 9.725. Arizona finished the rotation with a score of 48.550

Arizona’s second rotation was on floor where Cindric had a high score of 9.800 followed by junior Kennady Schneider and freshman Maddi Leydin with 9.725. The GymCats held the lead after floor with the score of 96.975.

Minnesota was close behind Arizona going into the third rotation, but took the lead with a higher score in the floor exercise with a 49.175. Arizona fell to second place earning a 48.575 on vault. Cindric showed her dominate performance once again on vault earning a 9.800.

Sophomore Danielle Spencer-Bearham performed well during the third rotation on the uneven bars scoring 9.850 with junior Victoria Ortiz and senior Krysten Howard following close scoring 9.800.

The GymCats high scores weren’t enough to catch up to Minnesota who had strong performances on vault scoring a 48.900. Minnesota took the overall victory of the quad meet with the score of 194.900, Arizona with 193.225, Maryland with 192.350 and Alaska-Anchorage with 188.175.

Cindric came in fourth all-around with the score of 37.825 with Minnesota gymnast Ciara Gardner and Bailie Holst taking first and second.

The GymCats will be heading back to McKale to take on Iowa State on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 4 p.m.
