Despite referees taking control of much of the game, No. 7 Arizona (17-2, 5-1) seized control in the second half and ultimately held off a late Cardinal run to defeat Stanford in a 89-82 victory on Thursday night.
Leading the way for Arizona offensively was the trio Stanley Johnson, Brandon Ashley and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson. They combined for 48 points and 14 rebounds, with Johnson scoring a team-high 19 points.
UA guards Gabe York and T.J. McConnell aided the trio with 13 points and 10 points, respectively.
Three Arizona frontcourt players picked up four fouls or more and nine of the 10 Wildcats that played picked up at least one foul. Stanford had five players with four fouls each.
After scoring 41 points in the first half, Stanford’s offense hit a dry spell in the second half as the Arizona lead grew to double-digits. However, the Cardinal never gave up late and brought a 14-point UA lead with 3:28 left all the way down to six points with less than a minute remaining.
Stanford’s leading scorer Chasson Randle scored 14 points in the first half, but put up six points in the second half as the Wildcats’ defense clamped down on the Pac-12’s leading scorer. Randle finished with a game-high 26 points but shot just 7-18 from the field and went 10-10 from the charity stripe.
Arizona shot 56 percent from the field, 42 percent from behind the arc and 67 percent from the charity stripe. Stanford shot 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from deep and 77 percent from the free throw line.
Up next for the Wildcats is a matchup with California on Saturday.
