Arizona quarterback Tyler Lyon won’t be throwing passes for the Wildcats anymore. Unless, of course, the Wildcats call a trick play that calls for a tight end to lob a pass down field.
Lyon has officially switched from quarterback, a position in which he was no higher than fourth on the depth chart, to tight end in an effort to try to earn some playing time. With the addition of freshman Matt Scott to the quarterback position and his subsequent rise to No. 2 on the depth chart, and redshirt freshman Bryson Beirne sitting at the third spot, Arizona wants to try and get Lyon, a junior, an opportunity to see more of the field.
UA head coach Mike Stoops said the decision was mutual.
Listed at 6-foot-5, 220 pounds, Lyon would offer starting quarterback Willie Tuitama another fine option in the redzone.
Stoops said he is unsure what role Lyon will play in the offense for now, but he could eventually work his way into the rotation at tight end and be able to have a greater contribution to the team than if he stayed at his original position.
