The Arizona men’s tennis team wrapped up play at the Aggie Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. on Sunday, officially kicking off the fall tournament season.

In doubles play, the Wildcats lost twice, unable to pick up victories against New Mexico State and Alibene Christian.

The Wildcats were represented by solid performances from Giacomo Miccini, Sumeet Shinde, Matt Dunn and Ben Lee.

Miccini and Shinde faced New Mexico State’s Luis Ramirez and Marc Westgate, who defeated them 8-6. Lee and Dunn matched up against Guilherme Gesser and Alfredo Desiati from Alibene Christian in a game that saw Arizona was defeated in a tiebreaker, 9-8.

“I felt nervous and tight on the court,” Lee said. “The altitude was a challenge for every team there other than New Mexico State.”

Dunn and Shinde faced each other in the consolation singles and ended with Dunn topping Shinde 6-3, 6-2.

“I think I played very well and showed that I can hang with the big boys,” Dunn said. “I look forward to improving my game at the end of matches and really shutting the competition out. Overall, it was a very successful weekend.”

Lee faced Eduardo Cabrita from New Mexico State and was defeated 6-2, 6-4.

“I think I definitely could have played better,” Lee said. “I’m not viewing this as a bad experience. The way to get better is by learning, and I learned a lot this weekend.

“I’m happy that I got the first tournament under my belt. I think I can do significantly better next time,” Lee added.

Miccini was scheduled to play Ramirez for third-place in the singles draw, but the match was left un-played.

“I was happy with Miccini’s performance,” head coach Tad Berkowitz said. “He did a great job this weekend and competed very hard.”

Berkowitz said he was pleased with the team’s overall performance this weekend and is confident that tournament play will prepare them for the spring.

“The guys did a nice job,” Berkowitz said. “During this time of the year, its important to be able to compete and get matches in.”

The Wildcats will travel to Tulsa, Okla., on Sept. 29 for the ITA Men’s All American Championships.

“I think a tournament like this is the perfect opportunity for the guys to get more valuable experience,” Berkowitz said. “Overall we had nice results this weekend.”
