The Associated Students of the University of Arizona, the university’s undergraduate student governing body, met on Oct. 13 to discuss the Arizona Board of Regents hiring a University of Arizona student regent.
The meeting was called to order at 7:09 p.m. and adjourned at 7:46 p.m. The Senate gathered in the Madera room of the Student Union Memorial Center and over Zoom.
According to ASUA’s post-meeting minutes, three senators were marked absent during roll call: Jack Healy, senator for the Eller College of Management, Louise Lalescu, senator for the College of Science and Sydney Mathis, senator for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
ABOR Student Representative
The board of regents is hiring a new student regent from the UA. The application is live on the ASUA website. Student regents serve as a non-voting member in their first year and a voting member in their second year on the board.
An informational video will be posted on the ASUA website on Oct. 15. There will also be an information meeting at the SUMC on Oct. 19 for anyone interested in applying. The application is due Oct. 29 by 5 p.m.
The term lasts two years spanning from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2024, and the student regent must be enrolled at the UA the entire time.
The previous student regent from the UA was Anthony Rusk. There are also two student regents from Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University.
The board of regents governs the public universities in Arizona. They have influence over tuition, financial aid programs and academic and student affairs, among other things.
Senator Interviews
Senator interviews begin Friday, Oct. 16 to fill empty spaces on ASUA.
According to Ally Devereux, ASUA executive vice president, there are seven applicants being interviewed from five unique colleges. The colleges represented by applicants are the College of Medicine, College of Humanities, College of Veterinary Science, College of Public Health and the College of Pharmacy.
She said she is unsure of when decisions on the applicants will be made, and there are currently eight vacant seats in the senate.
Good Deeds Over Fines
Noah Vega, ASUA student body president, wants to implement a week during the year students can make donations to Campus Pantry in lieu of paying fines to Housing and Residential Life.
Students receive fines for a variety of reasons, but mainly for breaking the set rules in dorms. There is not a definitive cost for each fine, so it varies on a case-to-case basis.
He said Parking and Transportation Services has a week where donations made to Campus Pantry are accepted instead of paying the fine directly to the school. The cost of donations must be equivalent to the cost of the fine.
Vega said he spoke to the head of housing about the idea, but it may be a while before anything happens.
Notable Mentions
Citlali Chimal and Kayla Randolph, co-directors of Campus Closet, came to speak during the call to audience. Campus Closet is an ASUA organization that provides UA students, staff and faculty with professional and casual clothing for free. It is located in the bottom of the SUMC near Campus Pantry.
They said Campus Closet will reopen on Oct. 27. They said their attendance is a “call to action … . [They] want ASUA to promote Campus Closet and the work done on social media so more people know about it.”
