Lucia Alonso hit a 3-pointer with 6:35 left in the fourth quarter to give the Arizona women’s basketball team a 12 point lead, but her nor the Wildcats would score again until the 16 second mark as it saw a comfortable lead evaporate in a 65-60 loss to the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors Sunday in McKale. Hawaii went on a 19-2 run fueled by guards Sara Toeaina and Tia Kanoa who combined for 28 points, 17 coming in the second half.
The Wildcats were in control for a majority of the game until the offense ran dry in the games last six minutes. A series of missed shots, fouls on Hawaii shooters and inability to get loose balls doomed Arizona who saw its record fall to 3-7 with one remaining non-conference game left on the season after the loss.
Alonso led all scorers with 21 points on the night, but as the score grew tighter, the Wildcats relied on freshman Marlee Kyles to come up with scores at the basket which wouldn’t work out. A culprit to the lack of scoring down the stretch may have been the passing. Arizona had just four assists on 21 field goals in the game to go along with 15 turnovers,
The Wildcats will take on Southern Utah on Wednesday at 7:00 pm before taking a break for Christmas and move into Pac-12 play.
