Stanford snaps Wildcats win streak

Arizona Women’s Soccer team huddles up before the start of their match against Houston Baptist on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018 at Mulcahy Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.

Arizona women’s soccer seven-game win streak was snapped Friday night after falling 2-0 to No.1 Stanford in Palo Alto.

A pair of goals was all Stanford needed to prevent the Wildcats from winning their eighth in a row in what would have been considered a monumental upset had Arizona found a way to come out on top.

From the opening whistle, the Cardinal showed why they are the top team in the country by controlling the tempo and maintaining possession of the ball making Arizona play on their heels the majority of the match.

The Wildcats had trouble finding any offensive opportunities while Stanford outshot UA 14-1 in the first half and 31-6 for the entire game. Arizona, which recently hasn’t had a problem finding its way into the opponents box, didn’t record their first corner kick until the 69th minute.

Coming out of the half credit Arizona’s head coach Tony Amato and his staff for whatever adjustments they made as UA began to gain more possessions of the ball and were able to find some open space on the opposite side of the field.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.

Off a set piece, Stanford’s Catarina Macario headed a ball just over the leap of Arizona’s goalkeeper, Lainey Burdett giving Stanford a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute. Macario’s teammate, Jordan Dibiasi, would add to lead slipping one by Burdett in the 79th minute off a Macario assist.

Credit the Wildcats for hanging in and putting up a fight. Stanford was and is simply the better team at this moment.

Stanford hold’s a 22-2 all-time record against UA.

The Wildcats will look to put this loss behind them and get back in the win column as they head back home to host Utah on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Mulcahey Stadium.
