Arizona volleyball is heading into its third and final weekend of play. That is, if they don’t make the postseason.
The Wildcats (15-10, 7-9) will take on University of Utah on Friday and University of Colorado on Saturday. Both will start at 7 p.m. in McKale Center.
Coming off a split against the Oregon schools, head coach Dave Rubio was baffled by his team’s level of effort.
For Arizona, athleticism and physicality aren’t the problems. It’s the team’s inability to recover and its multitude of unforced errors.
“We’re making too many errors, that’s the bottom line. We haven’t been able to close matches,” Rubio said. “Our emotional and mental state hasn’t been very good once we get down and have reacted better and played better in the first half of the season. The second half of the season, teams get to know who you are, scout you better, and we’re not reacting to tthat very well.”
The only consistency Rubio has seen is in senior outside hitter Courtney Karst, he said.
Last month Arizona beat both Utah and Colorado on the road.
However, the Utes have been heating up, despite the last three losses on their record.
The Buffaloes, meanwhile, have yet to win a conference match this season.
“Right now, making it to the playoffs is the least of my concerns,” Rubio said, “I’m really just about playing well on Friday night against Utah.”
