Burglary search leads to possible homicide

San Joaquin County Sheriff’s detectives were investigating an apparent homicide Sunday that might have happened after a home burglary.

Around 11 a.m., deputies responded to a house in the 4200 block of East Carpenter Road in Stockton after a family member reported a possible burglary, said Deputy Les Garcia, a department spokesman.

When deputies arrived, they found a door to the home had been forced open, but they were unsure if anything had been taken.

During a search of the house and other buildings on the property, deputies outside found the body of an elderly man with an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body, Garcia said. The victim’s identity was not released Sunday pending notification of relatives.

Some neighbors in the rural pocket near the southeast corner of Highway 99 and Mariposa Road said they did not hear or see anything Sunday.

But Richard Lara, 68, said he has seen cars driving in and out of an adjacent field in the middle of the night. Another neighbor, Walter Weichold, 75, has lived on Carpenter for 40 years and said the area frequently attracts robbers and people looking to rip off parts from a nearby wrecking yard.
