GymCats fall to LSU in final meet of the season

The UA Gymnastics team huddles together after completing the second rotation of the UA v UNC, SJSU, and Air Force meet on March 9th in McKale Center.

Tumbling, flipping and twisting isn’t over yet for the Arizona gymnastics team despite their regular season coming to an end Saturday afternoon after falling short to the LSU Tigers, 198.125 to 195.525. The Wildcats finish their season with an overall record of 2-9, but even with the lack of wins Arizona hit many new career and season highs throughout the season.

To kick off the GymCats last meet they began on their strongest event, the uneven bars. Senior Madison Cindric was able to tie her season high earning a 9.875, followed by junior Danielle Spencer with a 9.825. Scores throughout the rotation were solid, but the Tigers clawed their way up early competing on vault to take the lead going into the second rotation.

Heading to vault for the second rotation, the GymCats found themselves lacking the high scores they needed to surpass the Tigers. Cindric anchored for the ‘Cats giving them a high on the event of a 9.750, but LSU held the lead of 99.100 to 97.700.

Arizona came out to the floor to show their skills, but were unable to beat any of the season or career highs. Senior Kennady Schneider is always a teammate the ‘Cats can count on as she earned the highest score on the event of a 9.850.

For the final event the GymCats found themselves balancing on the beam. Scored remained inconsistent on the tough event, but junior Haylie Hendrickson came out earning a solid 9.800 for the ‘Cats. Schneider performed a solid routine finishing her dismount with an ‘Arizona Stick’ earning a 9.825. Cindric was able to wrap up the competition for Arizona on beam earning a 9.850.

Although the GymCats season comes to an end they aren’t quite done yet. They will be back in Tucson, Ariz. for the 2018 Pac-12 Gymnastics Championships that will be held in McKale Center on Saturday, March 24. The first session will begin at 1 p.m. followed by the second session at 6 p.m. Arizona will find out what session they will be competing in on Sunday, March 18.
