The Arizona women’s tennis team finished the weekend with a quarterfinal singles appearance at the ITA West Regionals in San Diego.
Junior Danielle Steinberg won two matches before losing to Amanda Fink of USC, 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. On her way, Steinberg beat Sara Yang of UCLA, 6-1, 6-0, and Milana Yusupov of San Diego State, 6-4, 6-2 on Friday.
“”The girls have played more matches now, so we’d like to see them more consistency in general with their play,”” said UA assistant coach Brian Ramirez.
In Friday’s play, sophomore Natalia Toporowska defeated both Marigrace Marshall of Pepperdine 6-1, 6-0, and Long Beach State’s Jessica Weeks, 6-0, 7-6(5) in consolation play. Toporowska fell to Anna Maskaljun, 6-4, 6-3 on Saturday.
“”Since everyone’s got individual goals, as a group, we want to see them continue more consistency in there play through the end of what’s essentially the fall events for us,”” Ramirez said, “”so we know exactly what we need to hammer on before the end of the semester.””
In a Friday consolation match, freshman Jane Huh fell to Tania Rice of Pepperdine, 6-2, 6-3. That same day in doubles play, Toporowska and Huh fell to Maskaljun and Katy Williams of Nevada-Las Vegas, 8-3.
“”I think the common thread is patience in execution,”” said UA head coach Vicky Maes. “”Everyone on this team needs a more solid base, whether in singles or doubles. Too often, our players fall into a pattern of unforced errors – making it difficult gain an edge and play their own game style.””
