After one day of action in Hawaii, the No. 32 Arizona men’s golf team finds itself in 16th place out of 22 teams at the John Burns Intercollegiate.
The Wildcats trail the No. 9 Nevada-Las Vegas team by 17 shots.
Brigham Young, Auburn, Colorado State all shot 279 to tie for second. Long Beach State (284) rounded out the top five teams.
Senior Brian Prouty, who won the Ping-Arizona Intercollegiate earlier this season, shot an opening round 73 (1-over-par) to finish the day tied for 49th. Sophomore Nick Park and senior Josh Esler also carded 73s.
Senior Nathan Tyler is tied for 79th place after shooting a 2-over 75 and junior Creighton Honeck is tied for 88th after shooting a 76.
Senior Ben Marsh, who was competing as an individual, shot a 75. His score will not be eligible to be used toward the team score.
Michael Drake of Long Beach State leads the individual field with his opening round 65 (7-under-par).
The Wildcats will continue play in the second round at 8 a.m. Hawaii time at Leilehua Golf Club in Wahaiwa, Hawaii.
