The University of Utah ruined Kamaile Hiapo’s historic night, defeating the Arizona volleyball team in straight sets by the scores of 25-9, 26-24, and 25-22. During the third set, Arizona’s libero Kamiale Hiapo recorded her fifth dig of the game, which was also the 1,000th of her career as a Wildcat.   

Set 1 (25-9)

The first set was not close for long, Arizona was able to match Utah’s first point but it was all Utah after that. The Utes were able to take a huge lead thanks to a nine-point run to give them a 15-3 lead. Outside hitter Dani Drews led the way for Utah during this run with two service aces and two kills. Arizona was never able to get close after that run, and Utah was able to take the opening set of this match. 

Set 2 (26-24) 

The second set was much more competitive than the first, as Arizona kept it close for most of this set. The set was often within one point; Arizona was not to build a substantial lead which ended up costing them. Arizona held a 23-21 lead late in the set, but back-to-back kills and an Arizona attacking error gave Utah a 24-23 lead and they would not be able to take the second set. The Wildcats were again let down by sloppy play as they had seven errors in this set, Sofia Maldonado Diaz was a bright spot for the Wildcats with six kills. 

Set 3 (25-22)

The third set began like the second with Arizona jumping out to a 5-2 early lead but Utah was able to come back tie it. The Utes would go on to take a lead and did not surrender it. The Wildcats were able to keep it close the whole set only going down by six at the most, but they could not get back in front. There was a bit of history in this set as Kamaile Hiapo was able to record her 1,000th career dig as a member of the Arizona Wildcats.

Arizona falls to 14-12 on the season after this loss, they will be back in action this Sunday, November, 12 at 12 p.m. in Mckale Center against the Colorado Buffaloes.
