As spring approaches, the music scene really begins to blossom. The weather starts warming up, and people finally come out of their winter shells. So, naturally, this rejuvenating time is perfect for attending music festivals.
Music festivals can be a great way to not only immerse yourself in incredible music but also to connect with the community and become inspired by artistic and musical talent. Here are some upcoming festivals that our disc jockeys are looking forward to.
Pot of Gold Music Festival at Tempe Beach Park: This music festival takes place over spring break from March 13-17 and showcases a different genre each night. March 13, for example, will host more upbeat, dancepop acts, such as Future Islands and Chromeo, while March 14 will feature rap and hip-hop with artists such as Schoolboy Q and Kendrick Lamar. The festival will also have a wide variety of local food vendors throughout the grounds, so you can check out what Tempe culinary experts have to offer while you’re waiting between sets.
McDowell Mountain Music Festival: This non-profit festival takes place in downtown Phoenix from March 27–29 and offers an eclectic mix of artists on its lineup. One of the headliners, Widespread Panic, is a legendary jam band and holds the title of having the most sold-out shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. So, it will be a unique experience to see it in a more intimate setting. For the headier crowd, Beats Antique and Thievery Corporation will provide a cerebral experience by blending tribal and world music with electronic fusion. Folk music will be strongly represented as well, with bands such as Portugal. The Man and Trampled By Turtles. The lineup also features some more commercially known acts, such as Passion Pit and Phantogram, which will definitely bring in a larger audience and rack up even more energy than in the years past.
Sonic Bloom: If you were able to attend Gem and Jam Festival this year and are still vibing from all the psychedelic energy and artwork, then you’ll definitely want to check out Sonic Bloom from June 18–21. It is held at Hummingbird Ranch in the foothills of Rye, Colo., which would be the perfect place to road trip in order to escape the Tucson summer heat. Sonic Bloom is a four-day camp-out that fully immerses the senses in visual and performance art and, of course, is coupled with some of the best electronic and psychedelic music producers from around the globe. If you want a taste of Sonic Bloom in Tucson, you can check out one of the headliners, Shpongle, at The Rialto Theatre on March 13.
