Athletic Director Greg Byrne announced that Arizona men’s basketball coach Sean Miller will remain at Arizona via Twitter on Saturday night. Byrne’s Tweet reads: “”Breaking news: Internet speculation wrong. Sean Miller is staying at Arizona as our hoops coach.”” Arizona Athletics also released a press statement confirming Byrne’s Tweet.
Miller was reportedly the main focus of the search for the men’s basketball head coach position at Maryland, which was vacated when Gary Williams decided to retire on Thursday.
Arizona Athletics reported that Miller also agreed to a contract extension, although the details were not released.
“”I’m pleased to confirm that we have agreed to an amendment to Sean’s contract that we hope will keep him in Tucson for many years to come,”” Byrne said in the release.
The Arizona Wildcats finished with a 30-8 record (14-4 Pac-10) and claimed the conference championship and advanced to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament.
Miller, the Pacific 10 Conference Coach of the Year, said he hoped to put an end to the Internet rumors surrounding his decision.
“”Over the last two days, the amount of inaccuracies that surrounded this entire process has been very disappointing. Hopefully, this will put an end to such speculation,”” Miller said in a press release. “”Believe me when I tell you, our administration has done everything to keep me here and ensure that this will be among the elite programs in the nation.””
Miller’s contract extension is still pending under approval of the Arizona Board of Regents.
