Pac-12 softball power rankings: ASU rebounds, UA drops, again

With two weeks left in the Pac-12 softball season before Selection Sunday, it is time to start thinking about the big dance.

Arizona’s RPI dropped to No. 32 after they were swept at Oregon State, and the Wildcats actually have a solid résumé. There are 33 at large bids to the NCAA tournament.

The UA can’t afford many more losses, though, and it closes out the season by hosting No. 5 ASU (42-7, 13-5) and traveling to No. 16 Stanford (32-16, 9-9).

The Wildcats’ record is 28-22 overall, 5-13 in the Pac-12, 23-9 non conference, 18-6 at home, 3-8 on the road and 7-8 in neutral games.

Arizona is 2-9 against the RPI top 10, beating No. 6 Nebraska and No. 9 Washington and 4-14 against the RPI top 25, also beating No. 14 Cal and and No. 18 UCLA.

The other RPI rankings of the Pac-12 are Oregon at No. 5, followed by No. 8 ASU, No. 20 Stanford, No. 33 Oregon State and No. 74 Utah.

The Wildcats are 7-18 against the top 50, 13-21 against the top 100, 20-22 against the top 150 and 26-22 against the top 200. UA’s only bad loss is to No. 147 Bradley and the second lowest is at No. 76 New Mexico State, but Arizona also beat the Aggies.

Over the weekend, ASU prepped for the UA series by rebounding from their shocking series loss at Utah, to manhandle No. 13 Cal (35-12, 9-9), beating the Golden Bears three times and run ruling them twice. Cal was without Pac-12 2012 pitcher of the year, senior Jolene Henderson.

The Daily Californian reported that the injury was day-to-day.
“I don’t think this injury is season ending,” Henderson said to the Daily Californian. “I expect to be out on the field before the post-season.”

Cal has lost four in a row, causing one of UA’s quality wins to diminish in value.

Arizona, already guaranteed its first losing Pac-10/12 season, must win at least one to avoid finishing at .500. The last time UA didn’t have a winning record was 1982, when they went 14-17.
