The Arizona women’s basketball team faced Seattle University on Sunday, Dec. 31, at 2 p.m. in the McKale Center. Following a loss to No. 20 Gonzaga University on Wednesday, Dec. 20, the Wildcats bounced back and defeated Seattle 89-52. The Wildcats end 2023 9-4.
First half
The starting lineup featured Jada Williams, Helena Pueyo, Kailyn Gilbert, Isis Beh and Breya Cunningham. Arizona won the tip-off, followed by a fast jump shot made by Williams, setting the tone. The Wildcats started this game with strong defense, causing early turnovers and time violations. Cunningham finally got to show off without early foul trouble, making a layup and jumper. With great defense and sloppy fouls on both ends, the Wildcats ended the first quarter 19-12.
In the second quarter, sloppy fouls kept occurring for both teams. Gilbert finally got her first points of the day with a beautiful jump shot. Arizona forced more turnovers and continued to outscore Seattle. It was clear that the Wildcats had complete control of the game. With great execution and teamwork, the Wildcats went into halftime 49-19.
Second half
The Wildcats started this half with an early layup by Williams. Seattle just couldn’t get control of the Wildcats. Arizona continued to cause turnovers and draw fouls. The Redhawks had an impressive three-pointer before the buzzer made by Aannah Interrante. The Wildcats continued to show out, dominating the paint and shutting down the Redhawks.
The Wildcats won this game 89-52.
Postgame and looking ahead
Arizona dominated, maintaining a constant lead throughout this game. The Wildcats showed exceptional teamwork and determination. This game was a great way to end the year for this team.
Arizona’s next game will be against the University of Colorado Boulder in the McKale Center on Friday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m.
