The University of Arizona soccer team beat the University of Pacific Powercats 5-0 on Sunday, Aug. 18 at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Soccer Stadium.
The Wildcats advanced their record to 2-0 on the season, continuing their undefeated start to the season, while Pacific fell to 1-1 after the loss.
In the first half, the Wildcats took 10 shots on goal, bombarding the Pacific defenders. Pacific was only able to take three shots on goal all game.
In the 9th minute of the game Nicole Dallin, a UA graduate student, scored her first of 4 goals for the Wildcats. Dallin scored her second goal 22 minutes in, followed by teammate Shanti Weddington scoring Arizona’s third goal in the 36th minute assisted by Freshman Rose Calkins.
In the second half, Arizona changed goalkeepers from Junior Olivia Ramey, who had a relaxed 45 minutes of play not having to defend a single shot, to Freshman Sofia Cortes-Browne, who only had to defend three shots from Pacific.
The Wildcats did not let up even though they were up 3-0. Just after the start of the second half, Dallin scored her third goal of the game, extending the Wildcats’ lead to 4-0.
51 minutes into the game, Dallin scored the team’s fifth goal on a penalty kick awarded to the Wildcats. Shortly after this final goal by Dallin, Pacific switched goalkeepers.
Arizona had seven shots on goal for the second half on top of the team’s 2 goals and four corner kicks.
Arizona stays in Tucson to take on NAU on Thursday, Aug. 22 at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Soccer Stadium. Arizona then will go on the road to Chapel Hill, North Carolina Sunday, Aug. 25 to play against the University of North Carolina.
