The University of Arizona soccer team beat New Mexico State University 1-0 on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m at Murphey Field. This was one of the hottest games the Wildcats have played this season.
Arizona’s Marley Chappel scored a goal 18 minutes into the game. The Wildcats attacked the New Mexico State Aggies on offense, having complete control of the match early on. The Wildcat defense continued to show up, protecting their own net. New Mexico had multiple free kick opportunities, but goalie Olivia Ramey made sure those shots didn’t end up in the back of the net.
Both teams continued to play hard until the half, but the Wildcats stayed dominant on their home field with a 1-0 halftime lead.
The second half started slow but the Wildcats brought the intensity. In the second half, Arizona managed to contain the Aggies’ high speed offense, allowing just two shots. The Wildcats outshot the Aggies 13-5 overall.
Throughout the match, Ramey made three saves and maintained a perfect record. This was Arizona’s fourth time shutting out an opponent this season.
The Wildcats will be going on the road to play the University of Utah on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. at Ute field.
