Team of the Week: Volleyball
Arizona traveled to Mobile, Alabama for the Alabama State Tournament. For the second straight week, Arizona volleyball remained undefeated in all tournament matches. The WIldcats secured this week’s victory with a commanding performance, only giving up one set during the entire tournament to the University of Alabama.
The Wildcats’ first win came against Alabama State, in which the Wildcats quickly routed the Lady Hornets in a 3-0 set defeat. Arizona excelled in the kills category, earning 48 in the matchup while Alabama State only got 20. The hitting percentage for the Wildcats differed dramatically from the Lady Hornets, with Arizona recording a percentage of .443 to Alabama State’s .076.
Arizona’s next matchup came against Prairie View A&M, in which the Wildcats controlled the game, winning in the first three sets. Arizona won 25-20 in the first two sets and rounded out their third set win by 25-18. While Arizona excelled in most aspects of this match, they were certainly pressured when it came to blocks; they would record three compared to Prairie View’s eight.
Arizona’s final match of the tournament was against the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Wildcats came out ahead after the first set, winning 25-22. However, Alabama defeated the Wildcats in the second set 27-25. After this releveling of the playing field, Arizona came back and won the final two sets 25-21 to get their third victory of the tournament.
Arizona once again had trouble with blocks, only recording five to Alabama’s eight. However, assists played out differently. Arizona’s setter Avery Scoggins would record 48 assists throughout the match in comparison to Alabama’s assist leader, Kayla Keshock, who posted 22 assists.
