Arizona women’s hockey came out of their weekend in North Dakota 0-2 after taking on No. 4 Minot State University in Maysa Arena Friday, Oct. 4 and Saturday, Oct. 5.
Game one
The Wildcats traveled to North Dakota on Thursday, Oct. 3, taking on the Minot State Beavers the following day. On Friday, the team was defeated with a 5-1 loss. The Wildcats battled in the first period with Brynn O’Neill, a freshman forward, putting the one and only goal in for Arizona. The Wildcats held strong for the rest of the period, not allowing any goals in.
In the second period, the Beavers were able to score 2 goals on the Wildcats, giving Minot State the lead. The Wildcats received four penalties in the second period as well, disrupting the team’s groove on the ice.
In the third period, Minot State put the Wildcats away with three more goals, leading to the Beavers 5-1 victory.
Arizona had 14 shots on goal compared to the Beavers’ 34. Olivia Sorlie, Arizona’s freshman goalie, made 25 saves.
Game two
The Wildcats took on the Beavers for the second time on Saturday, Oct. 5. Arizona came away from the game with a loss of 8-1.
In the first period, Minot State scored 3 goals, giving them a significant lead over the Wildcats. The second period resulted in 2 more goals for the Beavers but Savannah Allen, a freshman defenseman, was able to score a goal for the Wildcats. The second period ended with the Beavers leading 5-1.
Minot State scored 3 more goals in the third period, leading them to an 8-1 victory.
There were only seven penalties throughout the entirety of the game, four of which belonged to Arizona players.
Sorlie played a huge role in the game with 25 out of 33 Beaver shots being saved. The Wildcats were able to get 8 shots off but only one of them found the back of the net.
Coming up
The Wildcats’ next game is Sunday, Oct. 20 against the University of Utah in Arizona Ice Peoria. Puck drop will happen at 10 a.m. The team’s next home game will be Nov. 2 against the University of Denver in Tucson Convention Center.
