The University of Arizona soccer team secured a dominant 5-1 victory at home against Kansas State University over the weekend, breaking a two-game losing streak for the Wildcats. The Arizona men’s basketball team opened its 2024-2025 season with an exhibition game against Eastern New Mexico University in which the Wildcats succeeded in routing the Greyhounds 117-54. The Wildcats were led by forward Trey Townsend who gave a stellar performance in the opener.

The soccer team found itself in a rut over the past week, facing back-to-back losses as the Wildcats fell to the University of Houston on Oct. 13 and the University of Kansas on Oct. 17. These games served as Arizona’s first home losses at Murphey Field.
Despite the recent defeats, Arizona bounced back on Oct. 20 in its last home game of the regular season against Kansas State University. The Wildcats had one of their biggest and best performances claiming a 5-1 victory. The team shared the ball heavily, with each of the five goals coming from a different player, including junior defender Maia Brown, whose 64th-minute goal was the first of her career as a Wildcat.
Nicole Dallin opened the scoring in just the second minute of the game; this early start would set the tempo of Arizona controlling the rest of the match. Kansas State responded with a goal on the other end at the ninth minute, however, this is when the Arizona onslaught would start. The Wildcats scored four straight goals, including two in the first half and two in the second half.
Dallin and Gianna Christiansen led the Wildcats’ stunning performance with a goal and two assists apiece. Megan Chelf and Narissa Fults each scored their second goal of the season. To close out Arizona’s regular season schedule, the Wildcats will prepare to face ASU in Tempe on Friday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. Looking further ahead, Arizona will get ready for the Big 12 Championship beginning on Oct. 30 in Kansas City, Mo.
Player: Trey Townsend – Men’s Basketball
Townsend, a fifth-year transfer from Oakland University, showed out by executing his shooting abilities in the exhibition game against Eastern New Mexico in the Wildcats’ 117-54 victory. The new Wildcat is coming off an impressive season from Oakland in which the Grizzlies knocked out the University of Kentucky. Townsend finished last season scoring a career-high 38 points and recorded 10 double-doubles over the year.
Against the Greyhounds, Townsend put up 24 points, five assists and four rebounds. He led Arizona in points and jointly led the team with five assists, along with Conrad Martinez. With plenty of time to develop throughout the season, Townsend is allowing his impact to be felt early on.
Despite a slower outing in the Red-Blue Showcase, Townsend shows his experience and ability to score when needed. Townsend completed 4-of-5 shots from behind the arch against Eastern New Mexico, his highest recorded total number of made threes in a game since Nov. 16, 2022, in a match between Oakland and the University of Toledo.
The Wildcats will face the University of Point Loma in their final exhibition game of the preseason on Monday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. in McKale Center. Entering regular season play, Arizona prepares for its first game against Canisius University on Monday, Nov. 4, at 8 p.m. in McKale Center.
