The University of Arizona softball team wrapped up its fall ball schedule, sweeping South Mountain Community College and Pima Community College on Friday, Nov. 1 at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium. The Wildcats defeated South Mountain 18-0, following with a 16-0 victory against PCC.
Game 1: Arizona vs. South Mountain Community College
Miranda Stoddard started pitching for Arizona in the first inning, striking out South Mountain. As Arizona headed to the plate, the Wildcats were able to get the first points on the board, scoring 2 runs. Arizona finished with 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning.
South Mountain did not score any runs in the second inning. Devyn Netz took the field to bat, further extending the lead for the Wildcats with another run. Emma Kavanagh added the Wildcats 4th run of the second inning with a home run.
With South Mountain still unable to score any runs, Dakota Kennedy hit a homerun to add to the Wildcats lead.
With back-to-back home runs by Kennedy and Kaiah Altmeyer, the Wildcats completed the third inning with 4 runs.
The Cougars were held scoreless in the fourth inning while Arizona extended the lead, gaining 5 runs.
The Wildcats won 18-0 in only five innings, sweeping South Mountain. Regan Shockey led Arizona with 4 runs and Altmeyer followed with 3.
Game 2: Arizona vs. Pima Community College
Arizona began the game putting a run on the board in the first inning. The Wildcats took control of the field, not allowing the Aztecs to gain any runs in the first or second inning.
Arizona totaled 2 runs heading into the third inning holding the Aztecs scoreless.
The first score of the third inning came from Shockey. Kavanagh shortly followed with the 2nd run for the Wildcats. The Wildcats completed the third inning with 5 runs to take a 7-0 lead over Pima.
Pima put pressure on Arizona’s offense, not allowing the Wildcats to score any runs in the fourth inning.
Netz gained the 9th hit for Arizona while Stoddard put Arizona ahead 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Wildcats shortly led 11-0 after Paige Dimler scored a run. Arizona gained 4 runs in the fifth inning.
Sydney Stewart extended the Arizona lead to 13-0 after driving in a couple of runs. The Wildcats won 16-0, sweeping their fall ball schedule.
Looking ahead
The Wildcats will be preparing for the regular season and begin competing in the Big 12 conference on Friday, March 7, 2025, against the University of Central Florida at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium.
