The University of Arizona men’s and women’s basketball teams began their regular seasons with massive wins Nov. 4. The women’s team started the evening off hot; the Wildcats beat the University of Texas at Arlington in a 73-54 victory, aided by almost every player giving crucial performances.
The men’s team was able to keep up the momentum and secure a dominating 93-64 win over Canisius University, headlined by an exceptional performance from Jaden Bradley.
Team: Women’s basketball
The Arizona women’s basketball team opened its regular season with a stellar performance, winning 73-54 over UT Arlington. The Wildcats added another program victory over the Mavericks, winning all three meetings since their first matchup in 1989.
The Wildcats secured their massive victory not through an individual performance, but by a culmination of team effort. Four of Arizona’s players scored 10 points, as well as two other Wildcats who scored 9 points.
Despite Jada Williams’ struggle shooting 2-for-15 from the field, she was able to capture 10 points with a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line. Breya Cunningham also put up a significant performance, recording a double-double and shooting 5-for-7 for the night. Cunningham finished with 10 points, along with 10 rebounds and two blocks.
Isis Beh and Sahnya Jah were critical in the matchup, putting 10 points up apiece but also providing crucial performances on offense and defense. Beh would finish with eight rebounds and four steals, providing a valiant defensive effort for the Wildcats.
Player: Jaden Bradley – men’s basketball
The men’s basketball team gained a massive 93-64 victory over the Canisius Golden Griffins in the Wildcats’ first regular season game. While this isn’t the toughest opponent Arizona will face this season or this month, the team exhibited early signs of what players will be impactful ahead. One of these players is Bradley.
Bradley finished as the second-highest scorer of the night with 15 points off 7-for-10 shooting, the most consistent shooting of the night from Arizona’s three double-digit scorers.
His impact wasn’t just felt with running up the score; he aided in offensive production and defensive dominance. Bradley dished out four assists, tying him for the second most assists of the night along with KJ Lewis. Additionally, Bradley grabbed four rebounds and led the team with four steals.
If Bradley can continue to perform at this level consistently, he will certainly be a Wildcat to keep an eye on. The upcoming game for the men’s basketball team will be on Saturday, Nov. 9 against Old Dominion University at 2 p.m. in McKale Center.
